Above all in the scale and rhythm of the journey. A river ship usually carries a hundred and something guests, moors close to the town centre and barely rocks at all.

In exchange, it does not offer the extensive infrastructure typical of large ocean ships: multiple pools, big shows or a wide choice of restaurants.

A river cruise is more intimate, but the cost of a single night can be higher than on a large ocean ship.

In Passau and in Vienna the berths lie close to the centre, so the walk with a suitcase is short. Further downstream that is not always so, and we put the question about a transfer before the operator on your behalf when booking.

A river ship keeps to a fixed hour and does not wait. Catching it up at the next port on the itinerary is possible, but getting there is the passenger’s own affair, and that is exactly why we recommend a night on the spot.
