Cruises from France — page 267

France appears twice in our inventory and means something different each time.

This page is about sea cruises: Marseille, Toulon and Nice on the Mediterranean, and Le Havre on the Channel. Sailings on the Seine, the Rhône, the Garonne and the Dordogne are a separate part of the offer, with different ships, a different rhythm and a different price — look for them under river cruises.

The number of sailings on offer sits above the list and moves with the operators’ inventory; below we explain how the French ports differ and when each of them makes sense.

Marseille and the other ports

Marseille is the main French embarkation port and the second largest in the western basin. The terminal sits outside the centre, but the transfer is short, and the airport takes connecting flights from Warsaw and Kraków.

Toulon and Nice appear less often and usually as ports of call. Nice is sometimes listed together with Villefranche — the ship then lies at anchor and passengers come ashore by tender, which eats into the day.

Le Havre is a different France altogether: the Channel, routes towards Southampton, Hamburg and the fjords, cooler weather all year. If a description shows Le Havre alongside Rotterdam or Zeebrugge, this is not a Mediterranean holiday.

Marseille also turns up as a port of call on its own routes — a ship leaves Genoa or Barcelona and stops there for a day. It is worth checking whether the description marks Marseille as embarkation or as a call: your air ticket goes to a different city depending on the answer.

Provence combines well with a few days ashore before or after the cruise. Aix, Avignon and the Camargue are an hour or two from Marseille, and hiring a car for those days costs less than buying a shore excursion in every port.

Check-in closes two to three hours before departure, and being at the port well ahead of that limit is the safe reading of it. The five-hour figure belongs only to a transfer arranged by the cruise line and has nothing to do with the port itself.

River France is a different product

A river ship carries one to two hundred passengers instead of several thousand, ties up in the middle of town and has neither pools nor theatres on board. It moves slowly and the bank is in sight the whole time.

The routes run the Seine from Paris, the Rhône from Lyon towards Provence, and the Garonne and Dordogne around Bordeaux. Excursions are usually included, because the ship stands in cities rather than industrial ports — that is the main difference in the final bill.

River ships also sail outside the sea season: Christmas cruises on the Seine and the Rhine run exactly when the Mediterranean stands empty. If you are looking for something in December, that is where to look rather than at Mediterranean routes at that time of year.

Choosing between the two is not about budget but about pace. A sea cruise gives you more countries and more entertainment on board; a river cruise gives you more towns and fewer people around you.

When to sail from France

The Mediterranean season runs from April to October, peaking in July and August. May, June and September give warmer water than you would expect, and the Provençal ports are noticeably quieter than at the height of the holidays.

The mistral, the cold wind off the Rhône valley, can blow in summer too and take several degrees off what you feel. A windproof jacket earns its place on deck even in July.

The wind has one further consequence in Provence: Nice is a tender port, and in a heavy swell the landing is called off. The ship then sails on to schedule and a day in Nice becomes a day at sea — with no refund on an excursion bought in advance.

Le Havre keeps its own rhythm: most sailings fall between May and September, because the northern routes are seasonal. Outside that window ships barely leave the port at all.

The contract is concluded in euros or US dollars, depending on the booking. Payment can be made by transfer in euros or in zloty. Payments made through the payment link are settled in zloty. We do not offer instalment payments.
