It is one of the greatest advantages of river cruising, and a common reason why many people begin their adventure with cruises on a river.
Below we show where the ships depart from, how a river cruise differs from an ocean one, when it is best to sail, and what to pay attention to before booking.
The Danube is the easiest to reach from Central Europe. From southern Poland, Passau or Vienna can be reached by car within a day, with no connections and no baggage limits.
The Rhine and the Moselle require a longer drive through Germany but remain within reach by car. For the Seine and the Rhône, a flight to Paris or Lyon is usually the more convenient solution.
Quay parking can be paid and is not always at the berth itself. At booking, we can check the available options for the specific operator.

The river ship is much smaller. It usually carries a hundred and something guests, so there is no crowding at the gangway or queues for the restaurant, and the service has a more personal character.
The berths are often in the very centre of town. You step off the ship and are close to the old quarter at once, without additional transfers or long journeys.
A great advantage is the calm sailing itself. On a river there is practically no rolling of the kind found at sea, so the risk of seasickness is minimal.
A river ship usually goes without large pools, ocean-liner-scale shows, a casino, water slides or a wide choice of restaurants.
The cost of a single day of the cruise can also be higher than on a large ocean ship.
If onboard attractions matter most to you, a river cruise may not be the best choice. Its greatest value lies in intimacy, calm travel and exploring the towns straight from the quay.
The cabin, full board and the voyage between the towns are included as standard. Beyond that, the differences between operators begin.
Some lines include drinks with meals, some include shore excursions, and a few include both. It is a significant difference from many ocean cruises, where the range of additionally paid services is usually wider.
That is why, with river cruises, it is not worth comparing brochure prices alone. You need to check what exactly a given fare contains. The differences between operators can be greater than the difference in price itself.

The season on Europe's rivers usually runs from April to October. Spring means blossoming valleys and often lower prices, July and August are the warmest months, and September and October attract visitors with the grape harvest on the Rhine, Moselle and Rhône.
At the end of November a separate season begins: Christmas market cruises. The ship moors in the town centres, so the markets are usually a few minutes' walk from the quay.
These are mostly short cruises of a few nights, and the best dates sell relatively early.
A river cruise depends on the water level. At a very low or very high state of the river, the ship may be unable to pass under a bridge or cover part of the route. In such a situation the operator may change the programme.
In practice this sometimes means covering a stretch of the route by coach, or transferring to a ship of the same class on the far side of the impassable section. The cruise still goes ahead, but its course may differ from the original plan.
The risk is higher during an extremely dry summer and after heavy rainfall. It cannot be eliminated entirely, so before booking it is worth checking how the specific operator handles such situations.

The Seine combines Paris with Normandy, while the Rhône runs through Provence and usually offers the warmest climate.
It is best to start from what you want to see. We will match the right river to that, not the other way round.

The best dates sell early, so it is worth booking them in advance.
What currency do I pay in, and who is the price quoted for?
Prices on the site are shown in zloty, while the contract is concluded in euros or US dollars. Payment by transfer can be made in euros or in zloty.
It is worth remembering that the brochure price most often applies to one person sharing a double cabin. If you travel alone, the operator adds a charge for single use of the cabin. On river cruises this supplement can be high, because the number of cabins is limited.
